Exploring Cold Wax & Oil

In this 2 day workshop Tonja will introduce you her process using oil and cold wax process combining traditional oil painting techniques, realism and abstractions. If you love texture and layering and the wonderful viscosity of oil paint you will love this class! Utilizing cold wax medium, tube oils, liquin, citrosolve and a variety of implements artists will explore new ways to create textures, color fields, mark making, layering & explore color interaction. Using various tools and techniques we will explore the possibilities of our mediums together. This workshop is explorative. We will create several small studies discovering the possibilities of this combination. It is perfect for those who have prior painting experience but are new to oils or seasoned oil painters who haven’t incorporated cold wax into their work yet. This workshop focuses on the process. Mixed Media- Watercolor and Pastel

Many artists new to watercolor find it not very forgiving and let's face it- down right frustrating! In this workshop you will discover tips and techniques to loosen up and how pastel can be just to tool to save your not-so-masterful masterpiece. Dramatic and versatile, chalk pastels can be one of the most beautiful of media. When combined with watercolor it transform your work.
I will help you remove any inhibitions you may have in regard to mixing media, giving you practical insight into both watercolor and pastel. Through the use of your photos, still life, live gestural drawing, demonstrations and critique you will learn basic compositional concepts, how to best translate your reference into a drawing and more! You will be encouraged and equipped to use this new technique with confidence, thereby adding a useful tool to your toolbox, and have fun in the process! For beginner and advanced students alike.

This class is for beginner to advanced students who are interested exploring mixed media acrylic techniques. We will focus on all things acrylic. Together, we'll explore many different acrylic mediums and their potential applications to create exciting, textural, illusionary and dimensional underpaintings that will add interest and life to your acrylic work.

We will learn to combine acrylic mediums and more to "make our mark."

Primary focus will be on on the portrait and gestural figure, but we will also look at how to incorporate elements of form, pattern, design using stencil, find our own personal "scrawl style" and more! Students may choose to delve into the portrait or explore the abstract.

This is a high energy, fun, experimental class.

Exploring Pastels

Dramatic and versatile, soft pastels can be one of the most beautiful, yet intimidating of materials. Tonja will help remove any inhibitions you may have in regard to pastels, giving practical insight into this wonderful media.

Tonja will walk you through the technical aspects of pastel use and beautiful mark making while introducing you all available forms of pastel and to various paper options. Our focus will be on human and animal portraiture. You will be encouraged and equipped to use pastel with confidence and have fun in the process!

Students are responsible for bringing their own supplies but Tonja will have some items available for experimentation. Soft and hard pastels in a variety of brands, pastel pencils as well as pan pastels will be available for or you to try during the class.

Solving the Puzzle of Portraiture

This class is for beginner to intermediate students looking to understand how to better draw the features that make up the human face. In this fast pace & FUN ONE DAY class, we will look at the basic anatomy and structural elements that are key in understanding how to represent the 3 dimensional components of the face in a 2 dimensional format.

If you are timid when it comes to drawing people, if you would like to gain confidence and learn to accurately draw a likeness then this is the class for you!

This class is for beginner to advanced students who are interested in boldly exploring mixed media acrylic techniques and texture on a large format. Learn to add interest and life to your acrylic work. We'll explore many different acrylic mediums and their potential applications to create exciting, textural, interesting abstract paintings. We will combine acrylic mediums while exploring ways to incorporate elements of form, pattern & strong design. Students may choose to treat these as underpaintings, adding elements of realism to them or allow them to remain abstract.

This is a high energy, fun, experimental class.

We will focus on all things acrylic. This class is for beginner to advanced students who are interested in exploring mixed media acrylic techniques with a portraiture focus. Together, we’ll explore many different acrylic mediums and their potential applications to add interest to your acrylic portrait work. We will learn several traditional and non-traditional ways to use acrylic & acrylic painting mediums. Our primary focus will be on the portrait, learning to better understand and communicate the features of the face form 3-D to a 2-D platform. We will learn to incorporate pattern, design using stencil, and our own personal ‘scrawl style’ and more!

Birds & Beasts - Acrylic Experimentation

This class is for beginner to advanced students who are interested in exploring mixed media acrylic techniques with a focus on animals. We will focus on all things acrylic. Together, we’ll explore many different acrylic mediums and their potential applications, adding interest to your acrylic animals and birds. Our primary focus will be on animals. We’ll explore how to quickly and gesturally capture the essence
of our subjects form. We will look at important structural elements, including muscles and landmark features that are essential to de ning the animals we are representing. We’ll also explore traditional and non-traditional ways to use acrylic & acrylic painting mediums including optional collage elements.
